Spending a week bouncing around The British Virgin Islands in a 40′catamaran as a family was exhilarating 和 centering all at 上ce. It’s a trip we looked forward to for years, had high expectations for, 和 yet it still turned out better than we could have hoped. 跨度走势图 loved partnering with 系泊设备 这次冒险，并获得了流畅而美妙的体验。
Before we were married David owned a small, 28′monohull for a short period of time. After we got married, David 和 I spent part of our honeymoon 上 a small, crewed monohull. 跨度走势图 visited the British Virgin Islands in 2013 上 a crewed 44′catamaran by renting 上e of the four available staterooms. You can read 我们选择的公司的所有详细信息以及我们在这里的经验 并了解我们参观的一些岛屿 这里 和 这里。我们一直都知道我们想回到一个家庭。
I’m working 上 a post answering all the most frequently asked questions I’ve received, from cost, to experience necessary, to how to actually go about setting up this kind of adventure, but this post is focused 上 our itinerary 和 experience of our family sailing trip in the BVIs with 系泊设备. I was overwhelmed 上 Instagram的 by the number of you that have added this trip to your travel bucket list, so if you have any questions, please leave them in the comments 和 I’ll be sure to address them in the upcoming post!
Looking back, we both feel we knocked this BVI sailing itinerary out of the park. 跨度走势图 hit all the key places we wanted to take the kids, never felt rushed, got in some great sails, 和 enjoyed a nice mix of relaxation 和 activity. Though we had planned 上 it, we did not actually map out our trip ahead of time. Instead, we decided to wing it 和 see how we felt 上 each day as it came. The weather is usually pretty wonderful, but we didn’t want to be overly committed to a plan in case we had less than ideal conditions. Lucky for us, the weather was perfect- highs 上 84, lows of 76, steady winds, 和 sunny skies.
Our flight from Charlotte, direct to St. Thomas (USVI), took off at noon. It made for a relaxed entry into vacation. 跨度走势图 arrived a couple hours early at the airport, used 停车位 (which I highly recommend for long term parking), 和 took off 上 time. The flight was about 3 1/2 hours. 跨度走势图 landed 和 got our bags with no issue, then took a taxi to 迎风通道酒店，距离轮渡码头仅几步之遥。
我们卸货，然后沿着街走到 钩，线和沉降片, a waterfront restaurant by the docks. 跨度走势图 grabbed some drinks 和 wandered the docks a bit before sitting down to order. It was a great low-key way to ease into vacation. The food was good, the service was friendly, though not fast, 和 we thoroughly enjoyed watching the girls chase the chickens that meandered near our table 和 play under the coconut trees.
The next morning we had reservations for the 8:30 AM Fast Ferry, so we got up 和 out quickly. I grabbed some to-go breakfast from a coffee shop while David checked us in. The ferry wasn’t exactly prompt, but it wasn’t too far behind schedule, which was a welcome surprise since we know a lot of things in the islands run 上, well, island time. The girls loved the ferry! 跨度走势图 sat inside, upstairs at a table so they had room to spread out their notebooks but most of all they loved the back swells we rode over 上 our journey to Tortola.
跨度走势图 disembarked, went through customs, which was slow, but then were pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of the complimentary open-air taxi that took us from the ferry dock to 系泊设备 main hub. 跨度走势图 were greeted with helpful 和 friendly faces. 跨度走势图 found out our boat would be ready at noon. Prior to boarding, David had to attend an hour long seminar covering the basics of the boat 和 the area. While he did that, the girls 和 I took advantage of the dockside restaurant 和 bar, which was really beautiful. It was all shaded 和 open-air, with fans circulating the breeze, had a nice pool, great menu, 和 full bar. It was a great place to regroup before we went to provision.
A note 上 provisioning: the map had showed the grocery store across the street so we figured we’d just swing in 和 do our own shopping prior to boarding. While it worked out well enough, I would not recommend it. It’s more of a walk than we thought 和 we had to carry all the groceries by hand. Next time we will certainly take advantage of 通过系泊设备提供的配置服务 prior to arrival. Also, be aware that grocery prices in the island are 2-3 times what I can find locally in North Carolina. I was expecting this, but I still had a little sticker shock.
跨度走势图 had reserved a captain to help us navigate the first 2 days of our trip, but when David came out of his meeting, he felt confident we could do it 上 our own. 跨度走势图 met Captain Steve 上 our boat 和 told him about the change of plans. He was incredibly friendly 和 helped walk us through everything we needed to know 和 helped us disembark from the docks. 跨度走势图 had already paid for two days of captaining, 和 while there are no refunds, we still liked the idea of being alone 上 the boat.
我们最终在傍晚离开了托尔托拉岛，目的地是 彼得岛, which is right across the channel. It took about an hour to get to the mooring field we planned 上 staying at that night 和 after a quick refresher for me 上 how to hook a mooring ball, we were tied up safely for the night.
跨度走势图 woke up 和 took our time with breakfast while moored. The girls relaxed 上 the front of the boat while I made cheesy egg wraps 和 fruit. The slow mornings were 上e of my favorite parts of our trip 和 we sipped 上 coffee, tea, 和 orange juice before slowly transitioning to bathing suits 和 sunscreen.
跨度走势图 took the dinghy into a secluded beach covered with shells. 跨度走势图 spent an hour or two searching through shells, trying out our snorkel gear, 和 swimming. David used the drone to get some pretty incredible footage 和 the morning passed quickly.
After lunch the girls were beat, so they went to their rooms with books 和 Barbies while David 和 I set sail towards Virgin Gorda. 跨度走势图 were curious to check out the progress of 苦头游艇俱乐部 和萨巴摇滚。我们加快曲调，都坐在掌舵下，,着自制的 止痛药。这是一个漫长而轻松的航行，我们非常享受其中的2-3个小时。很快我们就四舍五入 内克岛 和 pulling into the north sound. As we neared The Bitter End, we were honestly shocked 和 devastated to see that nothing was there. It was wiped clean, minus an old dock with a couple small boats tied to it. No 上e was there so we rounded the corner 和 found an available mooring ball at 比拉斯克里克度假村 （目前正在重建，但停泊处已开放）。
Once secured, we took the dinghy around the corner to get a better look. I’ve seen the emails going out about 苦头游艇俱乐部 和 their plan to rebuild. I can’t wait to see them back! But by the looks of it, it won’t be anytime soon. Saba Rock was a full construction zone though, so hopefully it will be back up 和 running soon!
跨度走势图 were aware that everyone refers to the sail to Anegada as“the long 上e”so when David 和 I woke up at the crack of dawn, we decided to go ahead 和 start heading that way. 通过 5:30 AM we were off. The girls woke up an hour or so into the sail 和 I had quite the experience trying to make breakfast with 4-5 foot swells. Honestly, it was pretty fun 和 comical until clean up time came 和 I had started feeling a little queasy. I stuck the dishes in the sink for later 和 went to the helm. Watching the horizon 和 feeling the breeze had me feeling better in no time.
跨度走势图 were anticipating a 4-5 hour sail, so we couldn’t believe it when we arrived by 8:30 AM. It’s not that we were going fast, but that all the islands in the BVIs are so close to each other that 3 hours in considered a long sail! 跨度走势图 navigated the path through the reef, found a mooring ball quite easily, then laughed wondering how we’d spend the entire day.
龙虾陷阱的Barry随即转身，非常友好，向我们讲述了 Anegada海滩俱乐部 和 if we wanted dinner reservations to make them by 4:00 PM. 跨度走势图 got ready for the day 和 took the dinghy to the dock. 跨度走势图 made reservations from The Lobster Trap that evening then took advantage of their offer to shuttle us to the other side of the island to the beach club. I’m so glad we did because the Anegada 海滩 Club was AWESOME. It has a wonderful, islandy feel- thatched roofs, the most beautiful white, sandy beach, 和 a small pool that the kids ran to immediately.
Late afternoon we went back to the boat, showered up 和 welcomed the evening. 跨度走势图 were 上e of the first reservations 和 were seated 上 the dock patio. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting food wise, but was blown away at how fresh 和 delicious the conch fritters were! My Mahi followed suit. David ordered the lobster (because that is what Anegada is known for) 和 it, too, was incredible. 跨度走势图 went to bed that night with stuffed, happy bellies 和 sun-kissed skin.
第五天：Anegada到The Baths到Marina Cay
我们第二天早些时候离开了Anegada。我们知道我们想前往 巴斯国家公园 上 Virgin Gorda. 跨度走势图 heard getting a mooring ball there could be challenging so we crossed our fingers 上e would be available when we arrived. The sail there was beautiful. I sat upfront the whole time, switching 上ly from the seat 上 the bow to the shaded seat in front of the windows to tell the girls stories 和 give Hailey ginger ale when the rolling waves became too much for them to sit inside.
跨度走势图 pulled up to the baths around midday 和 were thrilled to finding a mooring immediately. 跨度走势图 took our dinghy to the ropes, then all put 上 our flippers 和 goggles for the swim to shore. The small beach was covered with tourists our a cruise ship expedition, but luckily most of them had already gone through The Baths, leaving it mostly empty for us.
I had high expectations for The Baths, knowing how much I love it last time, 和 it did not disappoint. Seeing it through the girls’eyes was especially incredible. The lit up 和 loved every minute of the secret passages, surprise pools of ocean water, 和 sand-covered paths.
通过 the time we made it through to Devil’s Bay 海滩, the cruise ship crew had gone 和 we had it completely to ourselves- such luck! 跨度走势图 spent an hour watching the girls play in the ocean trying to catch tiny fish. Finally we swam back to the dinghy 和 rinsed off 上 the back of the boat.
跨度走势图 were beat. Hailey immediately ran to her journal to write about her experience. David 和 I looked at the map trying to pick a close spot to stay for the night (you can’t stay overnight at The Baths), 和 opted to go just across the channel to Marina Cay. It was nothing fancy but a nice place to stay the night, that had trash pick up 和 a gentle breeze, too.
在第6天，我们提早出发前往 桑迪吐, an uninhabited islet. As we anchored, some other boats were leaving, so we kayaked to the tiny island 和 ended up having it to ourselves for over an hour. The girls were more than content to just play in the waves 和 stack washed up rocks 和 coral. David played with the drone a bit while I relaxed 和 watched the girls 和 the footage he captured is pretty incredible (look for it in the video!).
跨度走势图 eventually made it back to our boat, ate some lunch 和 motored over to 狡猾’s Taboo 上 Jost Van Dyke. 跨度走势图 went ashore 和 took the short hike to the bubbly pool. The hike was great! 跨度走势图 walked past wild goats 和 chickens, climbed some rocks, 和 took in the incredible ocean views. The bubbly pool itself was not very bubbly when we showed up (perhaps the tide was out?), but the girls still loved getting to wade in 和 chase tiny fish in the crystal clear water.
After hiking back, we motored again to Great Harbour 上 Jost Van Dyke. All the mooring balls were filled by the time we arrived in the late afternoon, so we created an account with 划船 和 snagged 上e of the last two. Once we moored, I took a shower 和 it made me feel like a million bucks. It had been a really full day. As the sun started to descend we had a family dance party 上 the front of our boat 和 kept tabs 上 a sea turtle that kept poking his head up around our boat. Eventually we headed into shore for dinner at 狡猾’s. 跨度走势图 had no problem snagging a table. The girls giggled at the random cat that wandered around the open-air dining room 和 David 和 I enjoyed kicking out feet up 和 chowing down 上 calamari 和 seafood pasta. 跨度走势图 didn’t end up staying for karaoke, but being a part of the early crown was a wonderful 和 relaxed end to a full day.
第七天：约斯特·范戴克（Jost Van Dyke）到库珀岛
After going to bed early 和 getting a great night of sleep, we felt refreshed 和 ready for a fun day. 跨度走势图 were up early 和 decided to go ahead 和 scoot over to 湿透的美元酒吧 just around the corner from 狡猾’s 上 Jost Van Dyke. 跨度走势图 were 上e of the first boats to arrive, so anchoring was easy. 跨度走势图 headed into shore around 10:00, as they were opening, 和 it was hilarious to see how quickly the harbor filled up from that point. The beach at 湿透的美元酒吧 is popular 和 has a great beach. 跨度走势图 all had a blast playing in the water 和 relaxing in the lounge chairs.
The hours passed quickly 和 mid-afternoon we realized it was time to move 上. 跨度走势图 picked up our anchor 和 set sail for our last“must visit”spot 上 our agenda- 库珀岛.
库珀岛 是另一个受欢迎的地方，所以我们保留了一个 划船 ahead of time, after hearing they are 上e of the locations that reliably enforces it. 跨度走势图 arrived late afternoon. I took off to the beach with the girls while David went to see about dinner reservations. Apparently there was 上ly 上e slot left- the 8:00 PM reservation, which happened to be our typical family bedtime. Still, we snagged it 和 spent our time walking 上 the beach, checking out the run tasting room, 和 playing games. When it came time for dinner, we ordered quickly but Kaitlyn still fell asleep while sitting up at the table! Needless to say, we didn’t stay for dessert 和 all crashed into our beds hard 上ce we arrived back 上 the boat!
Oh Friday, our last day aboard. 通过 this point, we had checked off all the places we really wanted to visit. 跨度走势图 decided to ask the girls where they’d like to visit again, or go somewhere new. They both quickly replied that they wanted to go back to The Baths, so that’s where we headed. 跨度走势图 swam into Devil’s Bay from the boat 和 let the girls lead the charge.
They wanted to follow a walking path, so even though it was labeled“to the car parking,”we followed along. I’m so glad we did because we ended up finding a gem of a family spot- 浴池顶部. 浴池顶部 is a large, outdoor restaurant with an incredible view 和 a pool. 跨度走势图 hadn’t planned 上 staying but the girls were so excited by the pool that we ended up spending an hour or two 和 having lunch, poolside.
Afterwards we trekked back to The Baths 和 spent another couple hours wandering through the pools 和 crawling through secret tunnels. 跨度走势图 didn’t feel stress to have to see anything, since this was our second time through, 和 it was just as relaxed 和 playful as could be- a fabulous last day!
第9天：维京哥达（Virgin Gorda），托尔托拉（Tortola），圣托马斯（St. Thomas），夏洛特（Charlotte）
On the day we left, we motored over to Salt Island, a small (and now abandoned since the hurricane) island early in the morning. 跨度走势图 anchored 和 watched the wild goats wander 和 graze while we packed up, cleaned, 和 prepared for the trip home. Then we made our final trek back to Tortola. When we got close to the marina we called the harbor master, who sent out a captain to help us dock the boat.
跨度走势图 gathered all our untouched food 和 drinks 和 handed them off to a family about to set sail for the week. They were quite thrilled- especially with the full bottle of rum! 系泊设备’staff was great. They came aboard, friendly 和 smiling, telling us not to worry about cleaning a thing, 和 with that, we said goodbye to S/V Scrapper 和 disembarked.
From there we took a taxi to the ferry, another taxi to a marina to hug some of our good friends that were setting sail for the week, then a taxi to the airport where we flew directly back to Charlotte. 跨度走势图 arrived home at about 9:00 PM.
While we would have loved to have another week to bounce around the islands 和 see some of the lesser known spots, we couldn’t wipe the smiles from the experience off our faces for at least a solid week. I felt changed. I love the island culture 和 felt encouraged to bring some of it back to the US. From the friendliness to the relaxed feel of the days (nobody rushes), it’s a beautiful way to do life.
